The Doctor’s in the desert – in Doctor Who Magazine 408!

In Doctor Who Magazine 408, DWM recounts the tales of what happened when the Doctor Who team filmed in Dubai... and catches up David Tennant, as he looks forward to his final adventures the Doctor.

Does David reckon he’ll be sentimental on his last day as the Doctor? “I don’t know how I’ll feel when I get there,” he says. “It’ll probably be very scrutinised. I don’t know if the last day will be anything like the last in story terms. Usually you’re so out of sequence that your final scene is something very unimportant – walking down the street or opening a door – so time will tell. But it’s – what? – 12 weeks away, so I’ll cope. I’ll find ways of coping.”

Also in DWM 408:

GAMES WITHOUT FRONTIERS!
The First Doctor becomes invisible while his companions play some decidedly deadly games... Discover the truth behind the story that nearly featured the end of Doctor Who as we know it, as The Fact of Fiction scrutinises that most colourful of black & white stories, The Celestial Toymaker.

WHO IS DOCTOR TWO?
The Watcher proudly presents his essential guide to to the Second Doctor, Patrick Troughton, and reveals whether or not this memorable incarnation really was a stove hat-wearing, recorder-playing, Chaplinesque cosmic hobo.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY?

DANGER DOWN UNDER!
The Doctor and Majenta land in Australia and find themselves assisting UNIT in Part One of a brand new comic strip adventure, The Age of Ice, by Dan McDaid, with art by Martin Geraghty, David A Roach and James Offredi.

Filming Update: Captain Jack's Back!

John Barrowman has been spotted filming for the last two Doctor Who specials today which confirms that Captain Jack will be making a return to Doctor Who for David Tennant's last episodes as the 10th Doctor. Filming took place in Cardiff and Russell Tovey who previously appeared in the 2007 Christmas special "Voyage of the Damned" as Midshipman Frame was seen with John Barrowman, which suggests that he will also be starring in the episodes, but whether or not he will be playing a different character is yet to be seen. You can see some pictures from the set below thanks to Scooty from the Doctor Who Forum.

Filming seemed to be taking place indoors today and David Tennant was seen leaving the building, but unfortunately no pictures of him or Russell Tovey have been posted online as of yet. Some people are also reporting that a Graske and a Slitheen were seen on set, and that this is all for a scene with the Shadow Proclamation. The last two Doctor Who specials will air at sometime around Christmas.

The Sarah Jane Adventures News

Filming for the third series of The Sarah Jane Adventures recently began in Cardiff and some set reports from filming are now beginning to appear online. Today Daniel Anthony who plays Clyde and Anjli Mohindra who plays Rani were both seen filming in a laboratory inside the University Security Building in Cardiff. Paul Kasey who appears as many aliens in costume was also seen today, and he was seen dressed as what looks like a Judoon, which hints that the Judoon might be this years returning Doctor Who alien, with last year's being the Sontarans, and the year before that being the Slitheen. The Judoon are a species of space police who previously appeared in the Doctor Who episodes "Smith and Jones" and "The Stolen Earth". The Sarah Jane Adventures series 3 will continue filming over the next few months and it will air on BBC One this Autumn.

In other news related to The Sarah Jane Adventures, it has been confirmed that 2 new exclusive audio stories will be added to the current range of audiobooks in the series later this year. The first of the audiobooks is set for release on the 3rd of September, and the second one will be released on the 5th of November. They will go on sale at the RRP of £5.99 each, and each one will be read by a member of the cast.

Gillian Anderson in Doctor Who?

Various different sources are reporting that Gillian Anderson, the actress who is well known for her role in The X-Files, will be appearing in Doctor Who Series 5 as the Rani. The Rani is a Time Lady who is an old enemy of the Doctor and she was originally played by Kate O' Mara in the classic series of the show. A BBC insider apparently said: "Gillian obviously has a massive sci-fi following and it's felt that it would be a major coup to have her appear in Doctor Who. The team behind the show are keen for the next Doctor to have lots of new enemies and Gillian would be a glamorous and impressive addition to the list. The Rani would be a perfect role for her as the character used to be regarded as one of the Doctor's most deadly opponents." The Daily Telegraph is one of the many sources which are reporting this story and you can view their report online here. It should be noted that at the moment the BBC have not confirmed any of this information so it may or may not be true.

John Barrowman Digital Spy Interview

A new interview has appeared online with John Barrowman, the actor who plays Captain Jack Harkness in Doctor Who and Torchwood. The interview was published yesterday on Digital Spy. In the interview John talks about; the third series of Torchwood, being in Doctor Who, and what he thinks of the actor who will take on the role of the Eleventh Doctor, Matt Smith. An extract from the interview can be seen below;

What can you tell us about the third series of Torchwood?

"I can tell you that Jack and the team find themselves in a completely different environment to what they're used to. Jack's past comes back to haunt him and the present team. It all sort of backfires on him and he has to clean up the mess that he and the government make."

What do you make of the new format?

"It's a series of five episodes spread over a week. Personally, if it comes back for series four, I'd like to do more episodes. But we had to do something that created an impact when we moved to BBC One. It's like we're always under a test and I wish at some point they'd go 'you're fine! Stay where you are!' and that's what I'm looking forward to. But again, it depends on the audience."

Can we expect to see you back in Doctor Who to bid farewell to David Tennant?

"Jack will always return to the Tardis if the Doctor's in need – to help save the planet or conquer an alien race trying to invade. That's all I can say! You know how secretive we are about all of that. Personally, as John, I would love to go back. If I'm asked, I'll be there in a second."

The full interview can be read on Digital Spy here. Torchwood: Children Of Earth will air on BBC One in either June or July this year, and it stars John Barrowman, Eve Myles and Gareth David-Lloyd. John will be appearing in a new entertainment series called "Tonight's The Night" which begins this Saturday on BBC One.

Doctor Who Series 5 Producers Revealed

The BBC have revealed who the producers will be for Doctor Who series five. Tracie Simpson, the producer of the recent Doctor Who Easter special, Planet of the Dead, and Peter Bennett, the producer of Torchwood: Children of Earth will both be joining the production team as producers for the fifth series. Beth Willis, the producer of the award winning programme Ashes to Ashes will be joining Steven Moffatt and Piers Wenger as an executive producer. Steven Moffat said the following;

"Beth and Tracie and Pete aren't the A Team, they're the people the A Team call. Tracie and Pete are the backstage stars of Doctor Who and having them on board as producers isn't just the best possible news for Matt Smith's first series, it's a massive relief."

"And Beth Willis, fresh from the brilliant Ashes To Ashes, is joining Piers and I as an executive so finally there'll be someone to wear the trousers."

The fifth series of Doctor Who will go into production soon and it will broadcast in Spring 2010 on BBC One. Matt Smith will be taking over David Tennants role as the Doctor, and Steven Moffat will be taking over from Russell T Davies as the lead writer for the series.

Today is also the day which marks the end of Lent, a time in which people give up a certain luxury for 40 days and 40 nights. On this day it is a tradition for people to give and recieve chocolate Easter eggs. I would like to take this time to wish all of my visitors a happy Easter, and I hoped you all enjoyed the day. Doctor Who Adventures Poll Results

BBC Magazines have emailed us the results of some polls that were recently conducted by the Doctor Who Adventures magazine. A press release regarding the results was sent to us and can be seen below;

The chilling Weeping Angels have outblinked the Daleks as the scariest Doctor Who monster of all time, according to a poll of young Doctor Who fans. Despite the scary statues only appearing in a single episode of the TV series, 2 out of 5 readers of Doctor Who Adventures magazine voted the Weeping Angels the monster they’re most likely to dive behind the sofa at the sight of. This is despite the reemergence of old foes the Daleks and the Cybermen in more recent episodes.

The poll, conducted by Doctor Who Adventures magazine to coincide with the upcoming Easter special of the BBC programme, saw the frightening Weeping Angels secure 41% of reader votes with the Daleks coming in second with 22% of votes, followed third by the Cybermen with 8% of the votes.

Perhaps unsurprisingly the younger generation of Doctor Who fans opted for David Tennant as their favourite Doctor. Having made his debut in Christmas 2005 he received an incredible 86% of votes.

Readers voted Tennant's predecessor Christopher Eccleston into second place with 12% of votes followed closely by Tom Baker with 9% of votes.

Moray Laing, Editor, Doctor Who Adventures says, “The Weeping Angels frightened loads of adults when they appeared in Doctor Who, so I’m not surprised our readers find them scary. Although they only cropped up once in the series a couple of years ago, these silent creatures made a huge impression on children. They really are the stuff of nightmares”.

“And congratulations to David Tennant for winning our favourite Doctor poll – he’s a fantastic Doctor, brilliant actor and great role model for children. Doctor Who Adventures readers can hardly wait for his next special this Easter!”

Doctor Who Adventures magazine is out every Thursday at the price of £2.10 across the UK and Ireland, and every issue features monter facts, a new comic, fun puzzles, posters and much more.

James Strong Interview

A new interview with James Strong, the director of Planet of the Dead, has appeared online today. The interview was published on Den of Geeks official website, and in the interview James talks about filming in Doctor Who in Dubai, whats its like directing, and much more. An extract from the interview can be seen below;

Is post-production still going on with 'Planet Of The Dead' or is it pretty much ready?

Oh blimey - no no no! [laughs] Going on and going on...and it will be going on right up until transmission. These are the tightest deadlines we've ever had, so it's requiring an enormous effort from everybody, really, since we finished shooting, to really push it through. Obviously it has to be to the same standards as normal, and more. It's a bigger episode than we've ever done before, and yet the deadlines are tighter than we've ever had before. But I'm sure we'll get there.

How has shooting in high-definition changed the pipeline of getting an episode out?

Well, I think part of the consideration in moving to HD was the number of CGI shots in Doctor Who. The cost of moving to HD was slightly prohibitive. But as things have progressed and more and more stuff is on HD, in the end it got to be that we were the only show not on HD. The equipment and the software that was being used was all HD, and we weren't. In the end [the fact that HD was prevalent] made it easier for us to work with it, from the point of view of effects and stuff.

Do you think you would have got a Dubai location shoot if Doctor Who wasn't having a truncated season this year?

Well, they went to Pompeii last year. I think if the script had been a normal episode rather than a special - not that there's ever a normal episode...this story demanded a proper desert, so I don't think it could ever have been achieved otherwise. It's a scary thing to think how we would have done it on Camber Sands or a beach in West Wales.

On set, was there a sense of valediction beginning for David Tennant's Doctor, or is that still very much in the future?

We don't really deal in this episode in anything that's to come, or that might happen to the Doctor regarding David's exit from the character. What's lovely about it for me is that it's the last of the standalone, pure Doctor Who adventures. After this episode I think it's going to get darker and into the story that will see the regeneration to the next Doctor. This one doesn't deal with anything at all that's come before or after.

You can read the full interview on Den of Geeks official website here. Doctor Who Planet of the Dead will gets its debut on television this Saturday, the 11th of April, at 6.45pm on BBC One and BBC HD.

David Tennant and Russell T Davies Interview

A new interview with both David Tennant, who plays the 10th Doctor, and Russell T Davies, the executive producer and head writer of Doctor Who, has been published on The Times official website today. In the interview they talk about the upcoming Easter special Planet of the Dead, why they are leaving Doctor Who and much more. An extract from the interview can be seen below;

Tell us about the Easter special, Planet of the Dead.

Russell T Davies: People are going to be Doctor Who-deprived this year, so it’s got everything in it: CGI monsters, prosthetic monsters, army, police, an alien planet . . . It’s our last chance to have a bit of a laugh. Now the Doctor’s facing the end of his life, it’s going to get dark.

Come the final curtain, will there be a dry eye in the house?

David Tennant: Well, I cried when I read it.

Did you make a pact to leave together?

David Tennant: We talked about it. It wasn’t a pact . . . I’d sort of decided. But then I nearly changed my mind again.

Russell T Davies: We had dinner and chatted about it a few years ago. It just felt right. The BBC asked me to do a series five, but I didn’t shift at all.
