DWM takes a stroll in the woods with Fourth Doctor, Tom Baker. As we pick our way through the trees, we learn how to make the perfect bonfire, why Tom owns a gravestone and why it’s not a good idea to combine drinking and acting…

“In those days… it’s a long time ago, and it’s a world that no longer exists. It was a world where wine was available all the time, and hard drinking was a sign of being sociable. David Harewood Digital Spy Interview

David  Harewood,   who  will  play  a  character called Joshua Naismith in the last two Doctor Who specials of the year, recently spoke to Digital Spy about his role. When asked about his character he said; "He's a rather strange individual. He wants to do something remarkable and he seeks the help of probably the most evil person in the universe. And by seeking his help, he sets in motion a series of events that could possibly bring about the end of the world." When asked about the atmosphere on the set of David Tennants last scenes as the Doctor, he said; "I'd say it was very charged - people were in tears. It was the end of a very successful partnership. It was obviously David's last outing, and it was also Russell's last outing and Julie Gardner's last outing. So everyone was saying goodbye to what had been a very successful partnership." You can read the full interview with David Harewood on Digital Spy’s website here.

Torchwood Magazine Issue 17

Titan Magazines have revealed the cover and details for issue 17 of the official Torchwood Magazine, which will be released this Thursday, the 20th of August, at the RRP of £4.99. This issue includes a new interview with the creator of Torchwood, Russell T Davies, and it also features a farewell to Ianto, behind-the-scenes features, new fiction, and much more. You can see the cover and an extract from the Russell T Davies interview below.

Torchwood Magazine

Russell on… Children Of Earth
"The idea of children stopping and saying, 'We are coming' had been with me for a very long time. Back in 1992 or 1993, I'd come up with something that had a lot of the same elements, but it never went anywhere. It was called The Landlords, because the alien race appeared as if they had always owned the Earth. What happens in episode five of Torchwood is another separate drama that I'd always had in my head as a possible six-parter, but as Children Of Earth started to develop, I thought, there's no point in just sitting on that idea – that's a great ending to this Torchwood story!"

Russell on… Ianto
"It's not as if we said, 'Let's kill Ianto! That will be fun!' I think Ianto's wonderful, and I think Gareth is wonderful, but if they all came out of Children Of Earth unscathed, it would just be so unlikely. Jack needed to be bitter and lost, and I think he needed Ianto's death to allow him to take that action in episode five."

Russell on… the future of Torchwood
"I could write you scene one of series four right now. I've got vague stories, and I know where you'd find Gwen and Rhys, and their baby, and Jack, and I know how you'd go forward with a new form of Torchwood."

Russell on… going to America
"It will literally be like starting from scratch. Nobody knows who I am out there, and it's a great chance for me to learn from them. The attitudes towards drama there are very different, and their outlook is more professional. Frank Cottrell Boyce once said that British writers are essentially amateur and they want to go home or go to the pub, but in America they can't wait to go in to the office."

Russell on… having his middle initial as the Torchwood logo
"Ha! That honeycomb logo was designed for Doctor Who first of all, and it had never occurred to me until now that it's my middle initial! Now you've pointed it out, I'm horrified people will think it's a huge ego trip! I don't even think of that 'T' as part of my name. I never use it. When I introduce myself to people, I'm Russell Davies – the 'T' is just on screen. So that's horrific – my name is Russell Torchwood Davies!"

The new issue of Torchwood magazine also includes an episode guide to the series one episode, Random Shoes, a guide to making the 456 from Children of Earth with exclusive photography from the Floor 13 set. More information about this issue can be found on Titan Magazine's website here.

Russell T Davies and David Tennant Interview

Russell and David

IESB.net has posted a new interview with David Tennant, the actor who plays the 10th Doctor, and Russell T Davies, the executive producer and head writer of Doctor Who, on their website. In the interview they talk about the specials and more and you can read an extract from the interview below.

Q: What will the tone of the specials be like?

Russell: Well, The Waters of Mars is one of those claustrophobic, submarine-type dramas, with them all trapped in an enclosed space with increasing darkness and intensity.

David: Planet of the Dead was the last hurrah for the 10th Doctor. He was in mortal danger, but he was loving it. Really, from The Waters of Mars and heading into that final story, the sword of Damocles is dangling, and that informs everything that goes on.

Russell: The finale is a personal epic. The Waters of Mars all takes place in a very small location. And then, that final story becomes epic, almost like a fairytale. But, it's really intimate, at the same time. It's got funny little aliens with green spikey faces, running around.

You can read the full interview with Russell and David on IESB’s website here. The next Doctor Who special, “The Waters of Mars”, will air on BBC One and BBC HD in November this year, and will air at a later date on BBC America. The final two specials will be shown over Christmas time.
