Last night I travelled to Birmingham with my family, to see Doctor Who Live at the NIA. The show opens with the Ood introducing us to their new master, Vorgenson, the son of Vorg from Carnival of Monsters, who has built an amazing but highly dangerous machine, the Minimiser. Vorgenson, who is a huge fan of The Doctor’s, keeps the deadly creatures from The Doctor’s travels inside this machine, ready to release and view at his own disposal.

“The Monsters are coming!” is what we here next from Vorgenson, before an amazing rocked up version of the Doctor Who theme tune is played by Ben Foster and his orchestra, as various creatures from The Doctor’s encounters are unleashed upon the arena. Throughout the show, Vorgenson releases monsters, including the Silurians, Scarecrows, Clockwork robots, Cybermen, and many more, from his minimiser upon the audience, accompanied by amazing music from the band. But what Vorgenson wants is The Doctor, as played by Matt Smith, who appears on a large screen during the show, giving the audience the feeling that he is actually there. Vorgenson claims to be a fan, but there may be a darker reason to his wishes for The Doctor.

The show is absolutely brilliant, and I enjoyed every minute of it. I would recommend it to people of all ages as the storyline, music, monsters, effects, and much more, makes it appeal to all members of the family.  By far, Doctor Who LIVE was the most amazing stage show I have seen in my life!

The first Doctor Who Live show kicks off tonight at the Wembley Arena in London! The show has been in production for months and is now ready to begin, and will feature amazing special effects including a flying Dalek.

Nigel Planer appeared on The Michael Ball Show earlier today to talk about Doctor Who Live, in which he will play a character called Vorgenson.

An exciting trailer has been revealed for Doctor Who Live, the show that will be touring around the UK next month. The trailer shows brand new clips of the 11th Doctor which will be used in the show, and some clips from previous Doctor Who Proms to give a glimpse of what Doctor Who Live will be like. SFX has exclusively revealed that the Doctor Who Live shows are a sequel to the third Doctor story, “Carnival of Monsters”. A report from them is below.

SFX is hot off the phone from an interview with Doctor Who Live director Will Brenton who confirmed to us what some fans had already suspected (fans putting two and two together and coming up with four? What is the world coming to?): the story behind the spectacular stage show that tours the UK later this year is a sequel to the 1973 Jon Pertwee Doctor Who story, “The Carnival Of Monsters”. Of sorts anyway.

“When I first came aboard this project, it was a project very akin to the Prom offering,” says Brenton, whose background is in creating massive arena tour spectaculars. “And what I thought we needed to do was bring this space alive a lot more, by making it a narrative that takes place in real time, in that Arena at that moment. Which is what we’ve done.

“So we’ve created a brand new Doctor Who character – called Vorgenson [to be played by Nigel Planer - concept art below], but it is a character who grows out of previous Doctor Who story, called ‘Carnival Of Monsters’. All of its genealogy grows out of that episode. And the fans who spotted that reference will enjoy how it happens. It’s taken what happened in that episode and moved it on, and updated it and had some fun with it as well.

“And that’s the kind of collaboration that we’ve been having. I sat down with Steven and said, ‘I’ve got this Jurassic Park kind of feel, with a character who’s reeling out these characters,’ and he immediately said, ‘Well, ‘Carnival Of Monsters’! Let’s let it grow out of that.’”

BBC Worldwide has announced that actor Nigel Planer will join the Doctor Who Live tour and will play a character called Vorgenson. Nigel Planer said: “I’m incredibly excited to be joining Doctor Who Live and this role is something of a boyhood dream come true. My character Vorgenson, is the Greatest Showman in the Galaxy and using his incredible invention, ‘The Minimiser’, he can make any Doctor Who character appear on stage as part of his travelling show dedicated to his hero. This live tour brings all the magic of the TV show together with a host of incredible effects. I hope that I can survive visiting nine cities in October sharing a stage with eleven Doctor Who Monsters and a flying Dalek in tow!”

A BBC press release reveals: The new stage show, based on the smash-hit series Doctor Who, promises to deliver a spectacular audio/visual experience featuring live music, special effects and appearances from the show’s most popular monsters including Daleks, Cybermen, Scarecrows, Oods and Silurian. The stage show will follow Vorgenson on an inter-galactic journey as he summons monsters in his Minimiser for the audience to see. Matt Smith will appear as the Doctor in specially filmed sequences to be shown on a giant screen on stage.

Craig Stanley, Doctor Who Live’s Producer says: “This show has something for everyone - Doctor Who fans, of course - but also anyone with a love of incredible illusions, imersive storytelling, magical music, scary monsters, and intergalactic heroes.”

The producers have also revealed that Nick Briggs, famous for voicing some of the scariest Doctor Who monsters including the Daleks and Cybermen, is onboard to replicate his voice talents live on stage every night.

Doctor Who Live will also feature a spectacular array of stunts and illusions designed by Britain’s premiere illusionists, The Twins. The Twins have come to prominence by designing the illusion of flying without wires, and they have a reputation for large scale stunts including making an elephant disappear live on stage – they’ve even taught magic tricks to the likes of Brad Pitt and Gwyneth Paltrow.

With an out-of-this-world set, Doctor Who Live will feature special FX, optical illusions and spectacular pyrotechnics building to an epic finale all accompanied by the music of long-time Doctor Who composer Murray Gold and brought to life by a live band.

Doctor Who Live is a fully immersive music and monsters spectacular and promises the same excitement, adventure and suspense that viewers have come to expect from the TV programme. Please note that actors from the TV series will not be appearing live on stage.

It has just been announced that there will be a Doctor Who arena tour this Autumn! The show, titled “Doctor Who Live” features monsters such as the Cybermen, Weeping Angels, and Daleks in a stunning out-of-this world set, acting out a script written by head writer Steven Moffat and the show will be using a live orchestra. Although the show doesn’t feature Matt Smith or Karen Gillan, it will feature specially filmed scenes starring them which will be shown across the show to tell the story. The tour will do 25 dates around the UK. A list of dates can be seen below, tickets go on sale this Friday.
